The open source software movement continues to exert a massive amount of influence on the technology world. Everything from Linux to Android to MongoDB boasts an open source background. In fact, the demand for tech pros experienced in this area of the industry is growing like gangbusters.
Let’s take a closer look at why adding a few open source skills to your toolbox is good for your career prospects. Understanding what employers want is vital. Remember, as a technology professional, the learning only stops on the day of your retirement!
The Rapid Growth in Demand for IT Pros Experienced in Open Source
A 2018 study by the Linux Foundation reveals the increasing demand for technology professionals with open source experience. The 2018 Open Source Jobs Report notes that nearly 90 percent of hiring managers encounter difficulty finding IT workers with open source talent. 48 percent of those companies currently support open source projects with the hopes of finding experienced professionals in this area.
The Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, Jim Zemlin, commented on the survey’s findings. “Open source technology talent is in high demand, as Linux and other open source software dominates software development. I am encouraged that companies are recognizing more and more each day that open source technology is the way to advance their businesses,” said Zemlin.
What Open Source Tech Skills do Businesses Need?
Not surprisingly, Linux is the open source technology with the highest current demand throughout the business world. According to the foundation’s study, 80 percent of the surveyed hiring managers are currently in the market for Linux pros. Over half of the companies involved with the survey plan on offering certification training in the skill – an increase of over 20 percent in the last two years.
In addition to Linux skills, companies also need IT pros experienced in container technology, such as Docker. Exposure to newer methodologies like Agile and DevOps is another big plus among hiring managers. As in recent years, Cloud experience also remains in demand.
The bottom line is simple. If your technology career needs a boost, consider earning a certification in Linux or some other open source technology. Additionally, volunteering on a non-profit project using any related technologies is a great way to gain that valuable experience.
