Forging a partnership with a top-notch recruiter is a smart call for project managers, no matter where they are in their career path.

The best staffing agencies stay abreast of the latest trends affecting the industry while knowing the top tech companies in the region looking for talent. Working closely with a recruiter helps them get to know you better, so they can match you with a company with a compatible office culture.

If you are interested in partnering with a technology recruiter specializing in project management candidates, here are a few tips to help you get started.

 Types of Recruiters

There are two major types of recruiters – internal and external. Internal recruiters are typically members of the HR team of a company with an open position. External recruiters, on the other hand, work for a third-party staffing agency that gets paid by the businesses looking for talent once a referred candidate is hired. A partnership with an external recruiter is your ultimate goal if you want to supercharge your career prospects.

Let’s be honest, good recruiters are hard to come by but invaluable in your search.  While we are an external recruiter I tell people that I think 80% of them are not good at what they are supposed to be doing.  The ones you want to work with should be able to provide you an “under the hood” real view of a perspective employer.  They should specialize in an industry or technology and know who the movers and shakers are in the space.  They should know how the company is doing financially, what is the career path for the position, intimate details on the company culture and hiring manager.

What Candidates Should Expect

External recruiters, in essence, work for the organization looking to hire a project manager or any other technology position. A good recruiter will help you throughout the hiring process and can provide guidance in putting together a quality résumé, cover letter, and interview tips to earn a job offer. You should expect a recruiter to get personal and approach an opportunity for a candidate with a deep understanding of every client, individual manager, and each industry they represent.  Honesty about your desires when it comes to company culture and job expectations, as well as honest answers to any of your questions, make for satisfying placements.

Whether you are looking for a career change, a change in location, a permanent placement, or short-term contracts, a recruiter has the experience and knowledge to best match your individual goals to a company you will enjoy working for.  If there are any issues, a recruiter can help you work through a transition.  A great recruiter will go the extra mile to actively ensure that businesses grow and careers take off.  They are with you every step of the way.  A career-long partnership with a knowledgeable recruiter gives you the best chance at a rewarding professional life.
